Overview

Banyan Global is an international development consulting firm committed to improving livelihoods through market approaches for a broad and lasting impact. Banyan Global implements the USAID/Malawi Learn to Perform (L2P) activity, with the mandate to improve the Missions performance management, enhance program efficiency, and advance Mission learning. USAID/Malawi has tasked L2P to conduct the final performance evaluation of its Feed the Future (FtF) Malawi Agricultural Diversification (AgDiv) Activity, which was implemented by the Palladium Group from 2016 to 2023.  

The primary purpose of this final performance evaluation (FPE) is to assess the extent to which the AgDiv Activity achieved its five objectives: (i) inclusive growth of agricultural incomes and employment, (ii) strengthening the resiliency of smallholder farming systems, (iii) improving nutritional status of women and children, (iv) empowering women, and (v) advancing the Country Development and Cooperation Strategy (CDCS) priorities for integration. The primary audience for the AgDiv final performance evaluation will be the USAID/Malawi Sustainable Economic Growth (SEG) office and Growth Pole implementing partners.  

Banyan Global seeks a Statistician with advanced quantitative analysis skills to undertake a meta-analysis of secondary and primary data from AgDiv Annual Beneficiary Surveys and produce outputs for use in the AgDiv FPE report. This is a remote consultancy. The consultant will work closely with the designated L2P technical lead and L2P Chief of Party to select variables of interest for this analysis and to develop a report.  

Responsibilities

The statistician will: 

  1. Engage with Banyan Global L2P team to finalize the scope of work, including selecting statistical procedures and outcome and control variables. 
  2. Review, clean, and create a concatenated dataset from all (seven) AgDiv annual surveys to use for the activity-life of activity performance evaluation. 
  3. Conduct rigorous statistical analysis of the concatenated dataset to determine the key outcomes of the AgDiv activity based on the expected activity results 
  4. Present the preliminary results to Banyan Global L2P team for feedback. 
  5. Prepare a report describing the methods and analysis results. The report will include different data visualizations, such as charts, tables and other infographics that are easy to follow and improve interpretation of results. The consultant must share the report and all visuals as much as possible in editable formats 

Qualifications

The consultant must possess: 

  1. An advanced degree in statistics, economics, or a related field. 
  2. Proven experience in conducting rigorous meta-analyses, impact evaluation, and statistical modelling, with a track record of applying these skills in the context of international development projects. 
  3. Familiarity with data analysis software 
  4. Familiarity with agricultural and economic development projects in international contexts. 
  5. Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex data in a comprehensible manner, tailored to diverse stakeholders. 
  6. Previous experience working with USAID-funded projects or similar international donor-funded initiatives. 
  7. Excellent oral and written skills in English are required

 

Deliverables 

The consultant will submit: 

  1. Brief inception report detailing the approach, analysis plan, including recommended statistical procedures, and timeline for quantitative analysis. 
  2. Comprehensive outputs from the meta-analysis of AgDiv annual survey data for use in the AgDiv FPE report.  
  3. Fully labelled and linked dataset, dictionary and analysis syntax  
  4. PowerPoint presentation of the analysis results 
  5. Draft and final report describing the statistical procedures used, results and conclusions. 

 

Timing and Level of Effort 

The estimated consultancy level of effort (LOE) is 25 days. The consultant is expected to work remotely throughout the period of the assignment. The position is open to international consultants and local Malawian citizens.
